Why Avoidance and Thought Control Strategies maintain the problem

As with panic attacks, when we avoid or try to control any obsessional thinking we ironically MAINTAIN the problem.

  1. We never get to learn that we CAN deal with the thoughts and that the feared consequences of the thoughts never actually happens.
  2. Thought ‘control’ actually increases our attention on the thoughts!
