The ‘downward arrow technique’

With obsessional thinking we mistakenly believe that the CONTENT of the thoughts running round our head must be the reason we feel distress.

But actually, the reason we are feeling so fearful is because we add IMPORTANCE to these thoughts – in other words we add anxious thoughts ABOUT these thoughts.

In order to uncover the deeper fearful thoughts we can use the Downward Arrow technique
